==Early Life and Education==
Ted Shackley was born on July 16, 1927, in Springfield, Massachusetts, and raised in West Palm Beach, Florida. His father, a hotelier, died when Shackley was 10, leaving him to be raised by his mother, a nurse. He attended Palm Beach High School, where he was a talented student, mastering German and earning a reputation as a reserved but determined individual.
	•	Education: Shackley enrolled at the University of Maryland but left to join the U.S. Army in 1945 at age 18. Stationed in Germany during the post-World War II occupation, he worked as a counterintelligence officer, interrogating Nazi war prisoners and defectors, which sparked his interest in intelligence work. After his military service, he returned to Maryland, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science. He later studied at the London School of Economics, enhancing his understanding of international affairs.
